Sternweis & Heiman Families, Wood County

2018 FTD

The Wisconsin Farm Technology Days is the largest agricultural show in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the nation. The three-day outdoor event showcases the latest improvements in production agriculture, including many practical applications of recent research findings and technological developments. Each year, it is held in a different Wisconsin county – on a different host family farm.

Wood County is literally in the center of America’s Dairyland. Dairy farming is the major agricultural industry in the area, with on-farm production and milk sales accounting for over $100 million annually. Processing milk into dairy products is also big business, generating another $550 million between five cheese production plants and three cheese processors. Cranberries are another major agricultural commodity. Wood County ranks first in the state for production and is the largest cranberry producing county in the nation, supplying one of every nine cranberries in the world. The county has over 222,000 acres of farmland. Grain production, Christmas tree farms and papermaking are other major pillars in the county’s agricultural landscape.
